I saw it in The Independent this morning - having decided the The Graun is getting beyond a joke and hardly a newspaper anymore.

Terrible, truly terrible story.

What more can I add? Senseless, pointless, horrible.

Craziness is, I fear, the hallmark of the 21st century and looks like increasing until sanity resumes sway.

I agree anticant fully.

This has been very sad and confusing day again.

Indeed.
Yesterday I had to write a small piece on this shooting for a newspaper and inside me I felt sick at heart.
Believe you me Finns today are feeling this in a hard way. Finns are not renowned for showing feelings but 2 times in one year?

All are asking one question : What is going wrong?

Is "what is going wrong?" the right question?

There have always been, and I fear always will be, a scattering of psychopathic homicidal nutters who run amok. The easier society makes access to lethal weapons, the more likely there is to be a Dunblane, spasmodic campus shootings in America, and episodes such as this latest tragedy in Finland.

What people need to be asking is "what is wrong with our social and educational systems that deflects us from spotting these disturbed personalities at an early age, and giving them the necessary care and support to overcome their anger and suicidal/murderous tendencies, or at least to keep them in check?"

The glaring fact that the prevailing trends in 21st century postmodern society are enough to drive most sane people to contemplate suicide or even homicide is another, and much bigger, issue.

Oh yes.
To ask the good and necessary questions is, as you say, the main problem.
Always difficult to do that when such crap is around or when a society is having fear rather than hope as the mainstream culture.

Who benefits?

anticant said...

Who benefits? The bankers, as always. Now they wheel out Bush, the great champion of American gung-ho free enterprise and no holds barred, to bail them out.

Fear keeps the population docile.

Jesus Christ Anticant comes out.
He supports the wicked Archbishop.
A religious link here methinks.

The dotty Arch of Cant is going to preach at Lourdes.

I am praying for a miracle of the Jehovah's Thunderbolt variety......

Tears and hugs.

The pathetic thing about these horrible incidents is that the victims, and their families, nearly always ask tearfully "why has this happened to me?"

The only truthful answer is "why not?" Anyone who has lived through the 20th century must surely know in their bones that "fairness" is a nursery myth.

All we can do is to recall John Donne's wonderful "No man is an island":

"Any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind; and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee."

But Anticant : We are all an upper-middle-class Phoenix today.

Today in Sweden a school was closed due to a similair threat.
Was this another copy-cat case?

anticant said...

Probably. All this stuff is copy-cat, because these pathetic inadequates can't devise a more interesting life-script for themselves.

Maybe they should be able to re-invent themselves like a good Capitalist and systematic dysfunction.
Now that is really Postmodern.

Full Marx for Bush!

Police forces are thinking that it is not nice to play with another toys. So now they are going to by their own PASI vehicles (armored troop carriers).

They proved to be very useful in nowadays police operations.
