I'd rather have George Brown drunk than Gordon Brown sober any day!

[Goerge Brown - who he? You're letting your age show, Zola.]

In Finland there has been a fairly traditional link between booze and the Foreign Ministry.

I was at a conference, one time, where a guest speaker was Lord Caradon.
He told a Drunken George story - one which I have heard with different names in pole position. No matter.

Story goes that at a state dinner, in South America, Lord Caradon was asked for assistance in 'fixing-up' Our George with the purple dressed beauty in the corner. Needless to say, George was in a considerable state of disrepair.
Caradon's reply was as follows.
I can't fix you up because :

1) You are drunk as a skunk
2) you are representing Her Majesty
3) That 'beautiful thing in the purple dress' is the ArchBishop of Caracas

I wonder

Lord Caradon was Paul Foot's Dad. He put his left Foot forward.

Charles II said of his prospective nephew-on-law, Prince George of Denmark, "I have tried him drunk and I have tried him sober, and there is nothing in him either way."

Wasn't the same true of George Brown? He seemed much more significant at the time than in retrospect.
