2006 Memories Re-Visited
If hegemony is active then the hearts and the minds ( souls?) of folk must be somehow together with that hegemony condition and practice. Go to war for democracy and freedom for all kind of thing. Hegemony is a subtle social, psychological and cultural institution. Here then is why I claimed yesterday that 2006 will go down as the death of US-UK hegemony.
There are now enough examples from China, Europe, Latin America and certainly from Middle East folk-actions that display a total disregard for USA-UK ways. The fact is this and simple. Nobody trusts or respects or believes in the USA-UK axis anymore.
Of course it remains to be explained just why or how this came about.

But they still believe in coca-cola, Disneyland, McDonalds, and even Murdoch, don't they? There's the rub.
Load of old Bollywoods I say.
What they believe in is Nokia-Land.
Good morning Anticant.
Mornin' all.
For me, seems easy to explain on a psychological basis.
You know, all that stuff about persuasion and propoganda. When the 'big lie' is shown to be false, those who were most convinced start to be the most viciferous opponents, whereas those who were easily convinced in the first place have long ago changed their mind.
Somewhere in that area - though I can give you something more precise once I have had a barrel of coffee.
Point is that once the 'magic' has disappeared even the carrot and stick are not going to be able to get it back.
Back again to ole Hans Christian Anders just like yesterday.
But Anticant ( when he is not grumpy or lost on the foggy wildernesses of HH) seems to think that a new Emperor will emerge and still be seen as full of the clotes that we all like.
Anticant is a pessimist sometimes.
Merkin : are you an optimisty?
Broadly speaking, I would agree with the the suggestion that someone else always picks up the baton.
In some ways, I would like the World to look something like a happy illustration from Watchtower magazine, but I know it ain't going to happen.
Where I am not with anti-grumpy is about where the leastest worstest alternative is. Dunno it.
A few years back my parents were invited to the opening of the new mosque in Glasgow and, later, the first wedding at the mosque.
My parents went to that - the only white people there - and it was an interesting sight showing the mix of cultures.
My father took 'the photos' for the wedding and it was simply amazing.
Two things remain with me.
The bridal party arrived in a split new transit van as did the grooms party - no hiring of limos here even though both families were well minted. Just a different way.
The mosque was built, some say, with money from Saudi and was as plush as plush can be.
The wedding meal was placed on a gorgeous 20 yard rug on the floor.
The men plus my mother ate first.
My aged parents were given chairs while the rest squatted on the floor.
What struck me most was the following - and is shocking in the photos. Every place stting had a drink. Of course, no wine or alcoholic beverages.
Every place setting had a two litre bottle of Irn Bru (yer other national drink).
Imagine it, if you will, a scene from the Arabian Nights in this mosque of Gold with jewelled skullcaps and turbans-a-plenty plus plastic bottles of Irn Bru.
Never to be forgotten.
So, years later, on returning to this country I was shocked to see the polarisation viz Islam that is taking place.
My own thought is that the majority is coming from the government growing an enemy deliberately.
At the risk of repeating myself I am giving you a link to my article on Pikey about the nature of community.

Merk : lots and lots there and after 3 readings I might only offer a little something.
When you write " the government growing an enemy deliberately" I do not sense the ole Merkin as thinking or wishing that all governments grow enemies because they choose to do so.
I guess i am asking here about the governmental thing itself.
If Enlightened despots may be OK sometimes and in some places cannot Enlightend Anarchists also be OK too?
I did not mean to twist your words here.
'Twisting the knife away...da,da,da'
I am explicitly saying that the government has grown this deliberately.
Remember that OBL's gripe was with the US for remaining in occupation in Saudi long after the 1st Gulf War and he wanted them out of the 'Holy Places'- there was no danger to the rest of us.
It is interesting to see how the Russian threat has once more been brought to life, just as the 'War on Terror' is being habituated into normality.
I would have no problem with certain enlightened despots that I know of personally.
To paraphrase Reagan 'I know he's a Despot but he's Our Despot'.
In a broader sense I think these people are just going to run the car into the ground because they can't stop now.
If the Summer adventure in Lebanon had been successful, we would be in Iran by now.
BTW : All this twistin the night away is quite nice.
Back soon ... I'm gonne be back soon ...
The fox is in his lair with a .....
Merkin, I don't think this government does anything 'deliberately' any more. If they ever did. Like the cretinous Dubya & co. Blair has been in a blind panic since 9/11. The US/UK blundered straight into the elephant trap bin Laden set. [Unless you believe one of the conspiracy theories].
As for the Muslims, there is no need to polarise opinion against them. They do it all too well for themselves. Apart from the fact that they don't understand democracy or pluralism, they have an extremely stupid bunch of self-appointed spokespersons. As I keep telling them, they should send for Max Clifford. Soon - I want my commission!
One Christmas Bun for you.
And a set of stringers.
A sudden thought: maybe billstickers is Max Clifford?
